LiSOCl2 cells come in a wide range of sizes from ½ AA to D cells. This chemistry offers high energy density (long life) and voltage in a very small format. This disposable (primary) cell is designed for commercial applications for meters, military equipment, and some medical equipment. This chemistry is ideal for very low continuous currents and/or moderate pulse currents.

Two types of lithium thionyl chloride cells are available:

  • Bobbin Construction: Designed for applications with long operating cycles and low-pulse requirements.
    • Examples include gas meters.
  • Spiral-Wound Construction: Designed for applications with long operating cycles and high-pulse requirements.
    • Examples include RF transmitters.
